Is Your Super Working as Hard as It Could?

Superannuation is one of the most important long-term investments you’ll ever have, yet many Australians are unaware that they may have more than one super account. This often happens after changing jobs throughout your career, with each new employer opening a new account unless you nominate an existing fund.

While multiple accounts may not seem like a significant issue, they can reduce the effectiveness of your retirement savings over time. Each account may charge its own administration fees, and you could also be paying for duplicate insurance cover that you don’t need. These extra costs can gradually erode your super balance and make it more difficult to maximise your retirement savings.

A simple way to address this is by consolidating your super—bringing all of your super balances together into a single fund. Consolidating your super can reduce unnecessary fees, simplify the management of your retirement savings, and make it easier to keep track of your investments and contributions. Instead of monitoring several accounts, you’ll have one fund working towards your long-term financial goals.

Before consolidating, it’s important to decide which super fund is the best one to keep. The ATO’s YourSuper Comparison Tool can help you compare super funds based on fees, historical investment performance and other key features. It’s also worth checking whether your existing funds include insurance benefits, as these may change or cease if an account is closed.

Getting started is simple. Simply log in to myGov and access the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) section. From the Super section, select Manage, then Transfer Super to view all of your active accounts as well as any lost or unclaimed super. Once you’ve decided which fund you’d like to keep, you can transfer your balances directly through myGov or by contacting your preferred super fund.

After the consolidation is complete, don’t forget to let your employer know which super fund you’ve chosen so that all future employer contributions are paid into the correct account.

Consolidating your super is a relatively simple process that can help reduce unnecessary costs, simplify your finances and ensure your retirement savings are working as efficiently as possible for your future.

Weekly News Update

Fuel Relief Continues

There was plenty of positive economic news this week, beginning with the extension of Australia’s fuel excise relief through July. While the discount has been reduced from 32 cents to 16 cents per litre, it continues to provide welcome support for motorists facing ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Unemployment Rates Falling

The labour market also delivered encouraging results, with unemployment falling to 4.4% after the economy added more than 40,000 jobs during May. Workforce participation edged higher, while youth unemployment also declined, reinforcing the strength of Australia’s employment market.

Sharemarkets experience a softer week

Global sharemarkets experienced a softer week as investors rotated away from technology stocks. The MSCI World Index edged lower, while the Nasdaq recorded its fifth consecutive losing session and the S&P 500 also closed the week in negative territory.

In fixed income markets, the US 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.38%, supported by softer inflation data and lower oil prices, which strengthened expectations that interest rates may continue to moderate.

Until Next Week…
